Positive Affirmations For Women On Pregnancy, Labor, And Newborn Care

Positive affirmations are statements, phrases, or mantras that you use to affirm/declare something to be true. They can help you ease anxiety and stress during pregnancy, childbirth, and when facing the challenges of taking care of a new baby.

While affirmations cannot change the outcome of your pregnancy, when used well, positive affirmations can be a powerful tool.

Here are some ways that pregnant women can use positive affirmations during pregnancy, childbirth, and beyond:

  • to encourage yourself when facing pregnancy-related challenges like morning sickness
  • motivate yourself to go through labor and delivery when it seems scary
  •  to boost your self-confidence as a mother when preparing to take care of a newborn for the first time.

Do positive affirmations work?

I believe that positive affirmations can help you get through your fears by giving your brain an alternative statement to focus on instead of the fear statements that might be replaying in your head.

However, I don’t want you to take my word for it.

Consider this, have you ever found yourself in the midst of a challenging task and had to give yourself a little pep talk in order to keep going?

I bet you said to yourself, “I can do this.”

The image that comes mind is when my son stuck a crayon piece in his nose and I had to figure out a way to get it out.

Boy, I can’t tell you how many times I repeated that to myself before I finally managed to get it out.

Repeating that affirmation helped me block out all the scary thoughts that were flying through my mind and allowed me to focus on finding a solution.

Another common positive affirmation example I can think of is when someone says to you, “I believe in you.” It sparks a certain emotion in you and gives a level of confidence and motivation to keep going.

Now say it to yourself, mama, as a self-affirmation, “I believe in myself and my abilities.”

How does that feel?

So, do positive affirmations work? You tell me.

Create Your Own Affirmations

You can also create your own affirmations. When I was going through a high-risk pregnancy last year, I made it a habit to repeat affirmations whenever I felt scared.

I would say, “My baby girl is healthy and I will meet her soon.”

Another affirmation I used was, ” I trust that my body will keep my baby safely and that she will come when the time is right.”

Because I was at a high risk of preterm delivery, I would say that over and over until I was able to relax.

Some times when I was really anxious, I would repeat to myself, “it is well” and take deep breaths.

When creating your own affirmations, make sure you keep them positive and about the present.

Here are some ways you can start them:

I am….

My body is …

My baby is….

I trust….

Now go on and make your own affirmations using the above examples.

How to do affirmations so they actually work

You need to repeat affirmations again and again in order to effect a mental shift and replace negative thoughts and emotions.

However, sometimes you say an affirmation and feel like it makes no difference. There could be hidden underlying beliefs that are limiting you and you need to deal with them.

If for example, you are struggling to believe that your pregnant body is beautiful, take some time to question yourself why you believe otherwise.

Could it be that your definition of beauty needs to change?

Did someone else close to you make a nasty comment about your pregnant body that you internalized?

Dig deep and dispel the lies that you may have subconsciously believed about yourself. Then repeat the affirmation again.

Each time you repeat a positive affirmation that you struggle to believe in, allow yourself to work through the underlying emotions that may be impacting your self-confidence.

Above all, always remember, you are enough. I think it is the most powerful positive affirmation for every woman.

Whether you are a pregnant woman, a breastfeeding mother, or none of the above, being able to love yourself with your flaws and all is perhaps the most important thing you can do for yourself.
