GIFT FOR NEW MOMS IN THE HOSPITAL

Recovery baskets are fantastic gifts for providing postpartum comfort. New mothers experience a multitude of body changes during pregnancy and delivery. Gathering the products that accommodate relief is a splendid contribution to her recovery. Was the birth natural or a cesarean? Knowing her experience is relevant to caring for her postpartum needs.

NATURAL BIRTH RECOVERY BASKET

Gifts for new moms who are recovering from a natural birth should include items that alleviate her discomfort and pains.

My recommendations for essentials in this basket include:

BIRCHWOOD WITCH HAZEL PADS

Birchwood pads are larger than most brands and provide needed comfort. These are similar to the ones they use in the hospital.

DERMOPLAST LIDOCAINE SPRAY

Immediate relief is found in this can they send her home from the hospital with. Having another for her purse or additional bathrooms in her home will be appreciated.

MOMWASHER PERI BOTTLE

This peri bottle is simple, portable, and designed to make her healing process easier (and cleaner).

MEDLINE PERINEAL COLD PACKS

Medline Perineal Cold Packs are as close as you can get to providing the cooling numbness she receives from the hospital’s ice-packed maxi pads directly after giving birth.

EARTH MAMA ORGANIC HERBAL SITZ BATH

Earth Mamas sitz bath is infused with organic herbs to soothe postpartum perineal areas. Formulated by a nurse, it’s a great assistance to her recovery.

CESAREAN BIRTH RECOVERY BASKET

Gifts for new moms who are recovering from a c-section birth (cesarean) should also include gifts that alleviate her discomfort and pains.

My recommendations for essentials in this basket include:

BIRTH SONG CESAREAN RECOVERY SPRAY

Birth Song cesarean recovery spray is an all-natural antiseptic spray for keeping her c-section incision wound clean. It also minimizes scar appearance.

MEDLINE TUMMY PADS

Medline tummy pads are ideal for keeping her wound dry from postpartum sweat and other bodily fluids.

SEAMLESS MESH DISPOSABLE UNDERWEAR

These are similar to the underwear the give her in the hospital. And trust me, she will wish she had more when she gets home. Make that wish come true by adding it to her basket.

TUMMIE BUDDY

Tummie Buddy is a seatbelt cocoon to cushion her c-section on the ride home from the hospital. Warning, you’re still responsible for slowing down (or avoiding) over speed bumps! It doesn’t guard against that upset.

CAUNISS C-SECTION RECOVERY UNDERWEAR

Cesarean mommies won’t want anything constricting around their bellies. These super stretchy full-coverage undies are lightweight and comfy.

PERSONALIZING POSTPARTUM RECOVERY BASKETS

After gathering essentials, make it more personal with her favorite chocolates, snacks, and other pleasures.

Additional ideas to make either basket more personal include:

BALEAF WOMEN’S ACTIVE YOGA LOUNGE SWEATPANTS WITH POCKETS

One of the first things I wanted (besides a shower) was my own clothes! Hospital robes are uncomfortable and unflattering attire. These are great because they have an elastic waistband and adjustable drawstring. You can fold them down to avoid them being around your tummy at all. Making them ideal gifts for both new moms.

ULTRA IDEAS MEMORY FOAM SLIPPERS

New mommies are almost immediately on their feet. Toss in a pair of memory foam slip-on slippers to soothe her aching feet.

MATERNITY LABOR DELIVERY MATCHING ROBE AND SWADDLE

Technically, there’s a little something for the baby in this gift. But I’m making an exception because it’s a beautiful, loose-fitting kimono style robe! And the matching swaddle and hat are precious. This is a stunning gift to make mama feel special.

GOOD MOMS HAVE SCARY THOUGHTS: A HEALING GUIDE TO THE SECRET FEARS OF NEW MOTHERS

Over ninety percent of new moms have thoughts that creep into her head sparking fear and concern. Ease her mind with this year’s go-to resource for assuring new moms.

FOOD SERVICE GIFTS FOR NEW MOMS

Immediately after coming home from the hospital new moms are hit with reality. All the help she’s been receiving from the nurses with her baby is gone. She’s about to reach new levels of exhaustion and alleviating the burden of what’s for dinner, will provide her saving grace.

DELIVER DINNER

Prepare your family’s favorite dishes and make a special delivery. Bonus sneak peeks of the baby come along with this service. Bring traditional lasagnas, casseroles, and other comfort meals in dishes that can be stored in the freezer. Take any burden away from your gift by emphasizing those dishes are hers to keep.

MEAL TRAIN

Collaborate with friends and family and start a meal train service. It allows you to select the dates that need and times of for drop-offs. And input the new mom’s food allergies and dislikes. Invite friends and family via social media, newsletters, or emails. The excitement a new baby brings creates an abundance of immediate support. But that wears off after about three weeks and she will still be exhausted and appreciate further assistance with meals. Go the extra mile and organize a second meal train to deliver future dinners or choose another method to guarantee that she isn’t left feeling abandoned or desperate for help in her state of blissful exhaustion.

MEAL-KIT SERVICES

Several meal-kit services deliver restaurant-style quality meals directly to her doorstep. Sign up for a couple of weeks (or months) of delicious dinners that are all easily and quickly preparable.

SNACK SUBSCRIPTION BOX

Having your hands full with a newborn can make finding the time to sit down and eat a meal a challenge. Give the gift of a snack box subscription so mommy can snack during or between feedings.

GIFT DINNER CARDS

If the idea of meal delivery is overwhelming but you understand the importance of this very special gift, choose dinner cards. Purchase gift cards to Grub Hub or Uber Eats and let her family pick out the foods they’re hungry for.

BE HER LUNCH DATE

Is your new mom friend home all day with only her baby? It’s likely she could use a little adult conversation to stimulate her mind and bring her out of her baby fog (temporarily of course). Whip something up and be her lunch date. She’ll appreciate the company and full belly.

DO HER GROCERY SHOPPING

Do you know her well enough to grab some household staples? If so, pick up groceries and bring them by. Not so much? That’s cool. Ask her to send you a list and do her grocery shopping for her.

GIFT GROCERY DELIVERY SERVICE

Grocery delivery services such as Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Delivery are other great resources for those in areas where these systems are available.

BREASTFEEDING GIFTS FOR NEW MOMS

Breastfeeding is a wonderful bonding experience and joyful time. But it’s also a huge commitment and a lot of hard work. Take away her anxiety about flow and production by providing her with these encouraging gifts for new moms who are breastfeeding.

LACTATION TEA

Give her the gift of relaxation with the Pink Stork Nursing Bundle. A variety of lactation teas that help with flow and production while inducing calmness. Herbal Mint is my refreshing favorite.

LACTATION COOKIES

Lactation cookies are a delicious way to applaud a new breastfeeding mom. Oatmeal Chocolate Chip is my favorite. But I was unaware of the Oatmeal Chocolate Rainbow Candy before! Be safe and grab her a bag of both?

Would you rather add a personal touch and bake her a batch of lactation goodies? Here is my favorite recipe:

1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks), softened or melted
1 cup of sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 large eggs
4 tablespoons brewers yeast (I’ve gone up to 6 tablespoons)
2 tablespoons flax seed meal (I’ve gone up to 4 tablespoons)
2 cups all-purpose flour (see notes for gluten-free version)
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups rolled oats
1 cup mini chocolate chips

Visit Trial and Eater, where Kelly provides step-by-step instructions on how to whip up these delicacies. And deliver a fresh batch as the perfect heartfelt gift for a new mom. Leave her with the recipe, remaining brewers yeast, and flaxseed so she can bake additional batches for future production.

LACTATION BROWNIES

My friend sent me lactation brownies from Milky Mama and I noticed an immediate increase in my milk supply. It was fun receiving a surprise in the mail. And they are a tasty treat for in between your million mom duties. Want to add TLC and make homemade lactation treats? Piece of cake. Or should I say, piece of brownie? Grab a box of brownie mix from the store and the ingredients required on its box (eggs/oil). Add 2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed and a ¼  cup of Brewers Yeast and voila!

REUSABLE BREAST PADS

Breastfeeding mothers will appreciate washable-reusable nursing pads. They come in different sizes and make the uncomfortable reality of leaking milk obsolete. I loved these because they are more comfortable and don’t itch like disposable alternatives.

NURSING COVERS

Nursing covers are so much more more than a way to provide privacy for baby to bond with mommy. Most nursing covers are multifunctional. Serving also as covers for car seats, strollers, and shopping carts.
