How to Use Essential Oils for Kids

Have you heard of essential oils but don’t know how to use them? Have you started using essential oils but would love to learn more ways to use them for kids?

I remember when I first became a mom. It’s scary, new, amazing, exciting, and nerve-racking all at the same time! I had so much on my mind all the time, and I was trying to make sure I was doing everything right. Essential oils were the natural tools I needed in order to help support my little one during this amazing yet scary time of my life.

I love them because they are such powerful tools that you can have at your fingertips to help your families! It’s amazing how simple they are to use, and how easy it is to start incorporating them into your home! In this post, I will share how to use essential oils for kids so you can start using them today.

What to keep in mind.

Even though essential oils provide a huge support for moms, we have to make sure we are using them safely with our littles. Before using essential oils for your kids, there are a few things to keep in mind.

  1. A little bit goes a long way. Essential oils are potent which means a little bit goes a long way. Always start off with less than you think you will need. You can always add in more later if needed.
  2. Diffuse. When in doubt, diffuse. If you aren’t comfortable using essential oils topically with kids, then you can always diffuse. The general recommendation is to diffuse essential oils around babies until they are at least 3 months old.
  3. Dilute. Always make sure you dilute essential oils when using them on babies and kids.
  4. Knowledge is power. Make sure you look at the usage information for each essential oil before you use it with your kids. In order to best support your kids, keep learning and growing in your knowledge every day.

Benefits of kid-friendly essential oils.

One of the reasons why moms love to use essential oils within their home is because there are so many great therapeutic benefits each one has to offer.

Lavender essential oil

Lavender essential oil is one of the most popular essential oils. It is widely used for its calming and relaxing qualities. Along with its ability to help calm, it also can soothe occasional skin irritations and reduces the appearance of skin imperfections.

This essential oil helps to ease feelings of tension. When diluted and massaged on the abdomen of infants or when added to bath water, Lavender essential oil can promote calming and soothing feelings.

You can also start to diffuse 30 minutes before bed to prepare for a restful night’s sleep.

Melaleuca (Tea Tree) essential oil

This oil helps to purify and freshen the air. It supports feelings of easy breathing.

As a mom, I love adding a few drops of Melaleuca (Tea Tree) essential oil to a spray bottle with water and using it on surfaces to protect against environmental threats.

Lemon essential oil

Lemon oil is uplifting and may improve mood. It’s a great support to use on those days that nothing seems to go right. When diffused, it promotes a positive mood that any mom would love!

It also cleanses and purifies the air and surfaces. It’s a great natural solution to use in your home. You can add Lemon essential oil to a spray bottle of water to clean tables, countertops, and other surfaces.

Ginger essential oil

Ginger essential oil is an oil that isn’t talked about as much, but it is very supportive. It may help reduce occasional nausea, and it may help to reduce bloating, gas, and occasional indigestion. You can dilute it and apply it over the lower abdomen.

It’s also helpful to diffuse in your home for added energy in late afternoons.

Frankincense essential oil

This oil is a powerhouse. If I could only have one essential oil to use for the rest of my life, this is the one I would choose.

There are so many great ways to use this amazing oil, and I am going to touch on a couple of the most beneficial ones that pertain to kids.

Frankincense oil has soothing properties, so it’s great to diffuse to promote feelings of relaxation and to balance mood. You can also dilute it, and apply it to the bottoms of their feet.

It also may have cleansing properties and can help to protect against environmental threats, and it may support healthy immune function and response.

Roman Chamomile essential oil

Roman Chamomile has a calming effect on the skin, mind, and body. It’s the perfect addition to any natural mama’s toolkit.

When diffused, it helps to soothe anger and irritability. Yes, please!

You can also use it at bedtime by diffusing or by diluting it and applying it to the bottoms of your children’s feet.

The best part about using all these essential oils for children is that when they are being used, the rest of the family gets to reap the therapeutic benefits as well! It’s a win-win situation for supporting a great atmosphere in your home!

Which essential oils are calming?

As natural mamas, one of our biggest questions is which essential oils are calming. We could all use some more support in that area especially at the end of the day. Am I right? These are the calming essential oils to make sure you keep on hand:

  • Lavender
  • Frankincense
  • Roman Chamomile

I like to keep these oils in the playroom, my son’s room, and the kitchen. That way I can easily use them when needed because they are ready to go!

Diffusing essential oils around babies and toddlers.

Like I said previously, the general recommendation is to only diffuse essential oils around babies that are less than 3 months old.

Diffusing can be a great option for using essential oils with babies and toddlers. It is an easy and gentle way that provides a number of benefits. I know a lot of moms who make sure to put the essential oil diffuser on 30 minutes before bed. This helps to prepare for a restful night of sleep.

  1. I LOVE this post!!! I started using essential oils a long time ago. My favorite is Tea Tree. I practically live by the stuff.

I have very sensitive skin and am therefore prone to skin infections. Tea tree oil is anti-bacterial and when applied topically to the skin can cure anything from acne to scabies and lice. It is a miracle oil.
