How to Choose the Best Cribs for Twins

Are you or a loved one welcoming twins? Congratulations, and how exciting! Naturally, two bundles of joy translate to making different sleeping accommodations. So I’m here to help with, the how, involved in choosing the best cribs for twins. Before diving into our best list of recommendations, of course!

Can twins sleep in the same crib?

Conflicting information spans the internet, regarding the safety of allowing twins to sleep in the same bed. Like all parenting topics, everyone has their own opinions.

However, in an interview, Dr. Betsy Marks, an Internist, Pediatrician, and mother of twins herself stated:

The bottom line is that the American Association of Pediatrics recommends against newborns sharing a crib with any sibling. And although there is no specific recommendation against crib-sharing with another newborn (such as their twin), there are thoughts that this would be similar to having a stuffed animal, or other loose blanket in the crib. Which is not recommended.

Dr. Betsy Marks, Romper

So what are the approved sleeping conditions for twins? The American Academy of Pediatrics, (AAP) recommends that babies should sleep on solid, individual surfaces, such as cribs and bassinets.

Never lay babies to sleep on couches, chairs, or beds with large pillows and cushions. These are falling and/or suffocation hazards.

Furthermore, babies should always go to sleep on their backs. Because babies that sleep on their stomachs are at an increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Parents should keep newborns in the same room during their initial stages of development. Experts advise for at least six months. However, co-sleeping or crib-sharing is a discouraged practice.

Cosleeping and the increased risk of SIDS?

Additionally, a statement released by the AAP, SIDS and Other Sleep-Related Infant Deaths: Updated 2016 Recommendations for a Safe Infant Sleeping Environment, stated:

The safety and benefits of cobedding for twins and higher-order multiples have not been established. It is prudent to provide separate sleep surfaces and avoid cobedding for twins and higher-order multiples in the hospital and at home.

Despite these advisements, parents choose to allow their twins to share cribs and bassinets. In these instances, it’s suggested that babies are to be separated when they begin to wiggle around. With no expectations.

Consider both the pros and cons of co-sleeping. Ultimately, only you know what is best for you and your babies. And if you have concerns, ask your pediatrician. Or follow the AAP’s recommendations, (they exist for a reason).

What to Consider Before Purchasing Cribs for Twins

There are several questions to consider before purchasing the best cribs for twins. After all, it’s likely you’ll need two of them. Also, your babies will be sleeping in them for a couple of years. Longer even, if you choose a convertible crib option.

Are there specialty cribs made for twins?

Yes! There are specialty cribs designed for twins. They’re innovative and have incredible designs. However, they aren’t as commonplace. Making them more difficult to obtain.

Also, they tend to be a more expensive alternative than buying two traditional pieces. Nonetheless, some families employ a crib designer for custom creations. Here is a dual-level slatted crib to give you an idea of what this sleeping solution looks like.

The slatted design and acrylic panels provide an ideal environment for visibility.

Alas, it comes with the option of an expert assembly.

The Benzara Modular Dual Level Slatted Crib is beautifully constructed. Furthermore, it’s a fantastic space-savor. However, there are other options if this set-up, or price tag, doesn’t fit your family’s needs.

Can I use mini cribs or bassinets?

Are you going to take the expert’s advice and keep your twins in the room with you for their first six months? It’s a beautiful bonding experience and so convenient having your babies nearby.

If so, consider starting with bassinets before transitioning them into full-size nursery cribs. Another option, if you’re partner is willing, are these amazing arms reach co-sleeping solutions. Place one on each side of the bed and share the late-night responsibilities of taking care of those beautiful bundles together.

Alternatively, mini convertible cribs are ideal. Because they’re designed to transition with your child. Between 3-6 stages of growth. Furthermore, they don’t occupy as much space in the beginning. And can easily be moved into the baby’s nursery when it is time.

How big is the nursery?

Another factor to consider is the size of the nursery. Are you going to have one nursery, or two? That may mean the difference between full-sized or mini cribs. It’s always good to measure spaces and arrange other furniture in the room to gauge your spatial needs.

We’ve covered, the how, to choosing the proper sleeping arrangements for your blessings. So let’s explore fabulous bassinets for double bundles. As well as, the best cribs for twins below.

Fortunately, she’s perfectly healthy but please don’t wait on grabbing these. They will be teething before you know it!
